Theater STOK – The Collective Stage
Theater Stok –
The Collective Stage
Who we are – the people, the place
We are artists from a variety of genres and disciplines. We are young and old, we come from Switzerland, Europe and Latin America. Our most essential languages are dance, theatre, music and text, gravity, laughter and hospitality. We did not plan to come together as a collective, it was a result of circumstances. Commitment, open-mindedness and trust are the foundations of our work. Theater STOK is a little theatre with character in the heart of Zurich. It is a poor theatre and proud of it, and draws its strength from its constraints. Theater STOK opens its doors: It builds bridges between cultures, between different artforms, between inhabitants of various neighbourhoods and between the generations. When Self and Other meet, something is produced – and we foster that production: Our events are guided by a humanist and feminist vision of life on earth; freedom and justice are of central significance to us.What we do – Quality and intimacy
Together, as a collective, we awaken the venerable Theater STOK at Hirschengraben 42 in Zurich to new life. We provide a home for high-quality theatrical projects, both our own productions and those of other artists. We deal with external organisers the way we deal with one another – non-hierarchically, as equals: We offer STOK as a venue with accessible conditions. Let our stage be yours as well! We run a hospitable house to make visitors feel at home here. We provide a space for topical, trans-cultural and interdisciplinary productions. How we work – organisation and finances
We work according to the sociocratic governance model. This means that all members of the collective share responsibility for decisions. Our association, under the name of Theater STOK, provides us with institutional security. For the time being we are working on a voluntary basis, without compensation. We invest our energy in the unique combination of stage and audience to be found in this special venue. We finance Theater STOK mainly by way of the revenues from external and internal productions, and in part with third-party funds.Zurich, September 2025
